This pre-trial hearing, years
in coming, stems from the charging, on 31 May 2011 and the arraignment, on 5 May 2012, of the five in connection with their alleged leading roles in the September
11, 2001 attacks against the United States. They are charged with committing the following eight offenses: conspiracy; attacking
civilians; attacking civilian objects; intentionally causing serious bodily injury; murder in violation of the law of war;
destruction of property in violation of the law of war; hijacking or hazarding a vessel or aircraft; and terrorism.
Defense Systems Journal was in Guantanamo Bay Naval Station the week of 7 November 2011 at the invitation of the Office
of the Secretary of Defense to witness the arraignment of accused terrorist Abd al-Rahim Hussayn Muhammad al-Nashiri.
