DoD Announces transfer of two GTMO detainees to Saudi Arabia
December 16, 2013
The U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) announced today the voluntary transfer -- on Saturday night, 14 December -- of Saad Muhammad Husayn Qahtani and Hamood Abdulla Hamood from the detention facility at Guantanamo Bay to the Government of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
DoD notes that, as directed by the President's Jan. 22, 2009, executive order, the interagency Guantanamo Review Task Force conducted a comprehensive review of these cases. As a result of that review, which examined a number of factors, including security issues, these men were designated for transfer by consensus of the six departments and agencies comprising the task force. In accordance with congressionally-mandated reporting requirements, the administration informed Congress of its intent to transfer these individuals.
As a result of the transfers, and following the (involuntary) repatriation two weeks ago of two Algerian detainees, DoD notes that today, 160 detainees remain at Guantanamo Bay.
